David Beckham Coming to L.A. Galaxy

My 11-year-old daughter is very involved in soccer and attends one or two Galaxy games each spring with her team. This is exciting news for the team and the sport in the U.S.

Yeah! I am a soccer fan and this is what the doctor ordered for the MLS. I like the Galaxy team, it will be interesting to see him with Landon Donovan. Will this mean he will be on our World Cup Team? (interesting to see him play with Freddy Adu) Probably one the most important sports stories in a while, whether Americans realize it now or not.

My daughter is a Donovan fan! The Galaxy team does a good job reaching out to the local children's soccer teams, sending "minor" players out to conduct AYSO clinics, hosting nights at the stadium, etc.

Bread and circuses, that's all the Romans care about. Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle. Can someone explain how you can be a fan of a professional sports team? You have a collection of totally disparate players together only for commercial reasons. They have no loyalty to each other, or to the city in which they're playing, or even the host country. Here today, gone tomorrow for a better contract and a few more baubles. So what are you cheering, the familiar threads of the uniform? How do you get civic pride out of a team of journeymen profiteers? Even worse, are idiotic sports fans who think a team has some kind of blood lineage, like talking about the 1942 Dodgers and the 2006 Dodgers. I've worked in professional sports merchandising, met many pro players, and I'm here to give you a reality check: They don't give a rat's behind about the fans. Okay, you have some good guys and some exceptions, but scant few. Most won't even sign an autograph unless you buy a $60 ticket at a fan show. Being around pro athletes is like watching hot dogs being made at the slaughterhouse, you'll never buy again. I'd like to see less spectatorism, and more activity. Then maybe girly man Arnold won't need such an ambitious health insurance scheme. Speaking of this David Beckham guy, he sure has a hot-looking wife. YOWSA!!Makes you want to kick around a soccer ball, too.
