Today at Disneyland: Golden Horseshoe Review

This month Disneyland has revived the show at Frontierland's Golden Horseshoe as part of its "Limited Time Magic" promotion.

The "Salute to the Golden Horseshoe Review" is slated to close on February 4th -- though I've heard a rumor from a source in the know that it's possible the successful revival will continue a while longer. We headed out there today to be certain we'd have a chance to see the show if it does close permamently on the 4th!

We obtained tickets for the first show of the day...

The beautiful interior of the Golden Horseshoe is said to have been inspired by the set design of the 1953 Warner Bros. musical CALAMITY JANE, which starred Doris Day and Howard Keel.

The show was quite entertaining. It felt slightly abridged, without some of the old comedy routines, but the cast was energetic and the actress playing Miss Lily was excellent. (And is it just me, or did I recognize a Princess Tiana among the singers?)

There's construction and remodeling going on all over the park at the moment. I'm not sure I remember seeing a crane in Disneyland before! It's there for this year's remodel of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

The Mark Twain is docked for rehab...

...and construction continues on Fantasy Faire on Main Street. Truth to tell, I think extending Fantasyland in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle is a mistake which clashes with the Main Street theming, and I've also been sorry to see Carnation Gardens disappear into Yesterland.

The park was very uncrowded today, with rain overnight having perhaps encouraged some folks to stay at home.

This ceramic cup is so cute...it might be coming home with me on a future visit!

The Mardi Gras celebrations have begun taking place in New Orleans Square:

On the calendar at the Disneyland Resort: This year the Chinese New Year will be celebrated at California Adventure rather than Disneyland. Special events, including Mulan's Chinese New Year Procession, will be held February 8th through 11th near San Francisco Street.

I went to Disneyland (again) today and saw the Salute to the Golden Horseshoe Revue show today - my 9th time! One of those 9 shows was an Annual Passholder show last Thursday evening. I really enjoy this show and know a couple of the band members. Yes, one of those girls is Tiana and also Dime of Five and Dime over in DCA. One of the men singers is a Dapper Dan. There are back ups for all the performers and so there are two Miss Lilly's, a redhead and a blond. I have seen them both and like them equally. I was told that they were both dancers with the shows in the 90's. Currently they perform as Miss Chris up at the Bar B Q. This show has proven to be very popular and City Hall is getting a lot of positive feedback! It is a very expensive show to put on though. I see it maybe coming back as an encore Limited Time Magic show later in the year - I hope. I plan to go again next Monday to see the last shows.

Thanks so much for that great background info, Irene! Did you enjoy the Annual Passholder show? What was the "musical souvenir" they were giving away?

We saw the blond Miss Lily, she was very good. A friend who sang in our wedding played Miss Lily back in the late '80s version of the show!

I'm hearing that a lot of the expense was to get the show up and running again, and they may be interested in continuing it, or bringing it back later in the year, to enjoy more of a return on the startup costs.

Best wishes,
Laura

Besides taking home our plastic boot mug that had Fritos in it the musical gift was a CD. It is entitled "Slue-Foot Sue's Golden Horseshoe Review" and has a picture of Betty Taylor in her costume on the front. On the back at the bottom it says "Limited Time Annual Passholder Magic" and is dated 2003. Obviously these are leftovers from something else. There are 10 tracks on it which feature Betty Taylor, Wally Boag, Donald Norris, The Mellowmen Barber Shop Quartet and The Strawhatters. I have not had an opportunity to listen to it yet. There was also a meal which I enjoyed that included a small cake with a photo (edible) of Walt, Lillian and their daughters at their wedding anniversary in the GH. I brought it home to eat and it was vanilla with filling that had raspberries in it. Over all I was very pleased. I can understand there would be a lot of start up cost to this. The production value on the show is very good and I would be very surprised if they didn't bring it back at least for another limited run.

Thanks so much for the info on the Passholder dinner show, Irene! That CD sounds very special. I was so touched when Wally Boag and Betty Taylor passed on within a day or two of each other, that felt like more than coincidence after they worked together for decades.

Best wishes,
Laura
